Essay (11) | Getting into the University of Florida has gotten a lot tougher over the last few years. I had a 4.6 GPA, was in plenty of clubs and had great recommendation letters but still got deferred on Round 1 of admission. I got accepted during Round 2 after a couple of nervous weeks. If you plan on attending Florida you better make sure you don't slack off at all in high school, that you stay active in clubs, do well on SATs, take as many AP and IB courses as possible and get good teachers to write your recommendation letters. I had high SAT scores (740 math, 740 reading, 790 writing). I had straight As in high school. I was in 9 AP courses (score of 3, 4, or 5 on all exams), and all my other courses were honors. I had about 180 hours of community service, and awards in dance and art. I was sure I would get into UF with all of that, but the main reason they wanted me was that I was a National Merit Finalist (they recruit National Merit/Achievement and give huge scholarships). SAT's and GPAs of people that I know for 2006:
1200 & 4.7, 1270 & 4.6, 1280 & 4.3, 1360 & 4.6, SAT and GPA of rejected:
1270 & 4.4, quite a few people in the top 10% of my classthe usual pointless extracuric. activities that everyone hates naturally do help. I did guitar, football league, Key Club also helps being a visible minority. Electrical Engineering
