GPA is very important and decent SATs are also important.

I got in with a 3.78 GPA and an 1890 SAT score.
I don't think they essays really mattered (I did all three of mine in under two hours).
I think they do care about diversity, though. I really pushed that in all of my applications and got in almost everywhere.
I applied Early Action and was accepted. I also applied to the Honors College, but was wait-listed and eventually denied. I still feel challenged, and even honors students only take about 1 honors course per semester. I would recommend taking AP/IB classes (if your school offers them) or dual enroll, as admissions evaluates prospective students by rigor as well as GPA, standardized test scores, extracurricular activities, and essays (for Early admission, only SAT/ACT and GPA/rigor are considered).

| Nov 08 2011 | I took AP classes all 4 years of high school, got a job with a leadership role, and had extracurricular activities at my school. I got good grades and test scores and wrote very good essays. At first I was wait-listed but I was applying toward the end of the application window, so I recommend you apply early.
Even though I was out of state and with a mere 3.3 GPA, I managed to get in this school. However, I had a fairly strong SAT - 1310 on the old scale, and was president of my school's NAHS. Applying with one strong credential and some work experience is probably better than a bunch of activities you were never passionate about. I would stress passion in the essay writing, too - the more you sound like you have a strong idea of what you want to do with yourself, the more likely they will let you in.
