I was allowed to take 12 hours (no more, no less) in my first semester there, and I couldn't get below a C in any of them. After that, I was granted regular status.

I took preAP and AP courses and for the most part made mediocre grades. I graduated with a 3.2 after failing several high school courses. I made a 24 on my ACT and an 1800 (out of 2400) on my SAT. UIW didn’t require an interview or even a generic admissions essay. I got in and even got a small academic scholarship.
