Grades is the primary thing to obtain an appointment. Although the military and physical aspects of the Naval Academy get a lot of attention, ultimately, it is the academic rigor that causes the most failures. Make sure you have an impressive high school "resume". Lots of activities. Signs of leadership. Athletics. Grades. Recommendations. Put together an impressive package to obtain both your nomination and appointment. Stay out of trouble. One brush with legal issues will pretty much destroy your chances. Good luck!

A Congressional appt is mandatory, so it helps to "know someone", but the competitive process exists for those who can make the grade, or cut the mustard as my Dad said.
