UW says:
"One reason we do not provide avg test score or GPA statistics to this website or any other is that students often think of these as minimums.  Although a large public flagship university with over 15,000 applicants each fall, the UW prides itself in using required essays and other additional information in a comprehensive review process that allows to consider students much like a typical small college might.  No, we can't admit everyone, but we admit a lot of students with great potential, not just great transcripts.  "

It's not that hard to get into UW. Just get decent SAT scores and a GPA of like 3.6 or something and you're good to go. They use a formula to calculate an admission index based on your GPA and SAT score...if you are in a certain index, you are automatically admitted, so they don't really look at your extracurricular and essays. But if you are applying for the honors program or hoping to get a scholarship from your department, that's a different story.

I had a lot of extracurricular activities in high school and I think that helped me because my SAT score and my personal statement weren't the best....

A lot of volunteer work, I was valedictorian of my high school, worked at a bank as an intern in high school and most importantly, had really good relationships with teachers. Luck!

Well, I applied for the honors college, but didn't get in becuase I really did a poor job reading the prompt and wrote the essay in under 15 minutes. I was arrogant, and I'll admit it. I did, however, get a scholarship, which was automatic with admission. For high schoolers, I will just emphasize that the the "optional" essays really aren't optional. If your index is below automatic, you need to write them all to get accepted and if you have a high admissions index, you need to write them all to get a scholarship. Don't slack off.

I had good grades, played softball for 4 years, volunteered, was president of a club and very active in other areas at my high school. Basically, i consider myself to have been a well-rounded student. i spent most of my efforts on the UW essays because it was my top school. i know i must have done something right since its harder for out-of-state students [only 20% are accepted]
