In the past UW has used an "academix index" for admissions. If they still use it you should be able to find a copy on the admissions web site. You look up your high school GPA and your SAT score on a chart and it will tell you your odds of getting admitted. I don't think they even read my essay.

Lots of extra curriculars including volunteer work. They look for well rounded people. I had a friend with a much higher GPA and test scores but she didn't get in...probably because her only extra curricular activity was cheerleading. My GPA and test scores were pretty low compared to the average (I had a 3.57 and 1060) but I was able to get in because I was involved in many activities, not just sports or student government, but volunteer work and leadership as well.

It's not that hard to get into UW. Just get decent SAT scores and a GPA of like 3.6 or something and you're good to go. They use a formula to calculate an admission index based on your GPA and SAT score...if you are in a certain index, you are automatically admitted, so they don't really look at your extracurricular and essays. But if you are applying for the honors program or hoping to get a scholarship from your department, that's a different story.

I had a lot of extracurricular activities in high school and I think that helped me because my SAT score and my personal statement weren't the best....
