I was very involved in academia in high school as well as many extracurriculars. I would encourage students to be involved in many activities in high school, which will prove to universities that you are a unique individual. If you are very interested in a school, don't be hesitant to show your interest. University reqruiters often look for the enthusiasm and proactivity in students.

Obviously good grades, good test scores, and extracurriculars are paramount, but you must also show interest in the school but visiting.

Sewanee is not extraordinarily selective, so if you just want to get in, do the obvious things. Make relatively good grades and test scores. Be involved in extracurricular activities. Hold a leadership position or two. If you want scholarships, you will of course need to work harder. Make perfect grades, take several AP classes, achieve high test scores (31 ACT at least), win awards, and hold several leadership positions in your extracurricular activities. Community service helps.

A good GPA, test scores, and difficult classes definitely work in the admission process. You will also get a boost if you're a legacy, have university connections, play a sport, or is you are diverse or a URM. If you are below, express interest and tour--it will help you A LOT!!
