Getting into VCU is easy, but if you have no academic motivation you won't stick around for long.  Language - French/Spanish/etc.

In order to get accepted to a reputable university and also satisfy my passions and interests, during my high school years, I worked hard earning As and Bs, was involved in sports year round and extra curricular activities, and also took on two foreign languages for all four years (as I knew those subjects would be my specialties in college). For students aiming to be accepted to VCU, I would recommend taking advantage of your high school's resources as much as possible. Take opportunities to learn about as many subjects as you are capable without stretching yourself too thin. Notice what subjects you tend to excel in, what subjects you are passionate about, and EXPLORE them. Test the waters while you are in high school. By the time your junior year rolls around, I would determine which subjects I would consider studying in college, and try to strengthen my skills and knowledge in those subjects. Finally, work hard, aim for greatness, and do your best to receive good grades BUT do not lose sight of what is truly important to you. Virginia Commonwealth University, is a diverse school, with good programs in Arts, Psychology, Film & Theater Studies. If your coming to VCU, my first advise would be carefully decide what major your going to get into. If Arts is your thing then this is the school for you. There are some pros and cons about this school. The diversity, and campus is a pro for this school. Diversity, has changed VCU for betterment, and the campus and environment is quite lively around here. But there are some cons to this school as well, I'm not really fond of the teachers at this school, they don't really care about student success & always seem to teach in a rush. Secondly - if you don't make friends here in the first few weeks, or months of school, its a lonely place to be in. So make sure you find a good group to hang out with. Otherwise, you will be alone around here even with all the diversity, and huge crowds. Finally - if your going to rent outside the Dorms - do not fall prey to management or false leases with sky high rents. Ask questions and gain information before signing a lease here. :) Art & Design Department

So easy to get into the University, a little harder for the art program/honors college. Make sure you apply early. I had a friend who was at a similar level as me artistically who did not get in. I believe it's because he applied only a few days before the art portfolio deadline. Honors college isn't hard to apply for as long as your GPA and SAT scores are high and you write a good essay.
I got into all my other schools (UVA, JMU) but came to VCU for the art program and financial reasons. Some people were surprised that I did not go to UVA. But let me tell you, college is college is college. I've met some people here who got into Ivy League schools. Choose your college for its degree program... I know when I was picking schools i was super stressed out but as soon as I made a decision I felt a million times better. If you are worried that VCU is too much of a.. I guess, not up-standing school, join the Honors college. But after a semester or two you'll realize, like i said before, that college is college. Don't go into debt trying to get an education at a fancier school when you could probably get the same or better education at VCU. |
