Don't go join a million clubs. Be at the very least in the top ten percent of your high school class, have near perfect scores, and play a few sports or have passion for one thing (i.e. world renowned violinist). Assuming you don't botch your essays, that combo should push you through the door.

Though my standardized test scores were average for Vanderbilt students, I had a good GPA and A LOT of extra curricular activities. I applied Early Decision, which I believe helps, and along with my admissions essay, I sent in a photo essay.

frankly I think that I got in because I was from the North and they are trying to diversify and because I applied to one of the less competitive schools

Be pretty, that's very important at this school.

I gave that school two years and then I got out and I am glad I did. I made some good friends, but overall the people were really shallow and typical. No one seemed to really care about what they were learning, only about the grades. I would also never recommend the school to anyone black or jewish. Vandy is trying to get more diverse, but the old prejudices are all still there. I am at a smaller, more intellectual school now and feel I am getting SUCH a better education.

Apply to more than one of the schools (A&S, Eng, Peabody, Blair). You might get accepted into your second choice, and then you can switch around later. I think my essays mostly helped when I was accepted. Choose a unique topic that helps define you and show off your writing skills.

The admissions office places a good portion of their decision in the quality of the student's essays. Everyone applying to Vanderbilt is smart, so a student has to really stand out to get in.
