As long as you have decent grades and arent a total slacker, you will have no problem getting in...there were kids there that I seriously wondered how in the hell they got accepted, so I guess everyone has a pretty good shot.
Admissions standards at Western are pretty much non-existent. I go to school with kid who got downright terrible SAT scores and High School grades were weak. I sure would not have admitted them. For they have done nothing to prove themselves in High Schools. It is actually quite upsetting that the school goes so low to admit students; sometimes I think I am attending a community college not a university. That could explain the lack of academic achievement. So I just sent in my application and my SAT scores just the basic.
I went through an transfer program with the Euro American Institute of Technology (CERAM) in south of France. Many credits were waived and I arrived as a junior level student at Western. During my time there, there was a small yet strong international community which can help students integrate into the community.
Be aware that this university is in the mountains, it is not urban and Asheville is about to be 35-40 mn away from WCU. There is also a strong presence of the authority (Campus police, troopers, sherif and Sylva police). Don't hesitate to verify your scholastic records and be sure all your credits are taken into account (verify with your tutor).
I filled out the application and paid the application fee. They're not that hard to get into. I remember one time a comedian that was performing here asked a student why he didn't go to a school closer to home (still in-state though) and his response was "I nearly failed high school".
Western Carolina has increased their admissions standards greatly within the past year. WCU is overall a selective institution and has gone up in the national rankings more than ever before. The university is recruiting a higher caliber of student and has a lower acceptance rate than previous years. Western Carolina is having to turn more students away because more students are discovering Western!
