I transferred to BYU from Pima Community College with 24 credits and a 3.89 GPA, wrote a solid essay and got in just fine. Once in the school I worked my tail off to get accepted the accounting program, which is insanely competitive but well worth the effort.
I had a great high school GPA and a mediocre ACT score. Enrollment is getting tougher though. Work hard in high school and get the best grades possible. Many people are finding out that BYU is a great deal and the result is difficult admissions (although the people who make it in are generally very interested in working hard).
When I applied, it was not difficult to get in. BYU still has a very basic way of applying and is very straightforward.
I do recommend that you need to want a culture of no drinking, mostly straight-laced people to hangout with. It's not a school for the wild and crazy guy or girls looking to sleep around. It's a religious school with high moral grounds so be prepared for it.
