For me, coming to BYU was a great decision. The social life is extremely supportive of LDS standards (almost too much at times), and for a lot of 18 year olds this is almost the best thing about it. Religion classes, devotionals, and being surrounded by faithful people makes for an experience that can't really be duplicated at a non-religious school. Academically I have found the English program to be very challenging. I've been pleasantly surprised at the open-mindedness of my professors, who have all been intellectually honest as well as people of faith. My only complaint is that the largeness of the school has at times gotten to me. My professors have been as helpful as they possibly could be, but the department is so large that they simply don't have time to develop meaningful relationships with students, as is more likely to occur in smaller schools. |
