Despite the fact that it is located in liberal MA, there is extreme self-segregation and there are a disporportionate number of conservatives in positions of power. The community is very polarized into uber-conservatives and uber-radicals. Campus safety is a non-issue if you're a white male—otherwise, expect some bigotry during your tenure here. Besides that, faculty are extremely friendly. This school is a great research institution, but is still student-centered. Students are vey vocal about their beliefs and it is a generally open campus about most issues. The support systems for people of color & LGBT people are decent—the staff really care, but you can tell that it's not the school's priority to help with the racial problems. |
