As a resident of Utah for the past 8 years I've experianced first hand the various levels of public education. While funding has always been an issue of concern, educaters have always provided Utah students with a top notch education equal if not more so than states which funnel more money into their institutions of education. While the University of Utah is certaintly no Berkeley or UVA, the education that is provided is certaintly no Chico state either. Both the law and medical schools have consistantly been in the top 50 rankingss by US News and World Report. In parallel the engineering, humanities, and fine art programs also are top notch. Outside of academics the University of Utah fares equally as well. While the U suffers from its commutter status and the lack of tight-knit qualities that result from it, the U makes it up by providing some of the best dorm facilities in the United States. After all where else can students live in a previous Olympic village? Moreover the dorms are not the only entities that have benifited from Olympic money. The U's football stadium, recreation facilities, and general asthetics have all undergone Olympic quality renovations. Indeed the U has many positive features, sadly, this bounty of positives is often overshadowed by a vast sea of negatives.

The problems that besiege Utah in general also plague the U. The most obvious one, being the omnipresent nature of the Mormon religion. The LDS religion and its culture prevade into every area of the University of Utah. From dating, to the social scene (yay charades on a friday night!), to the uncomfortable anti-gay/leftist/environmentalist nature of the student body. While a non-mormon can still find fun on the weekends, the reality is that SLC nightclubs and 3.2% keggers really arent that enjoyable.

Secondly, the total LACK of any diversity on campus really isolates what few minorities that goto the U into ethnic cliques. This seperation of students isnt helped by the administration, who themselves seem to lack any concern for students whatsoever. As a Honor College student on full scholarship, I was dismayed by how unhelpful the Dean of Students and his staff were to me with my problem. Regardless of the fact that the University was essientially paying me to attend thier insitution and seemed at least by this scholarship, that they valued me as a student, the Dean on numerous occasions remarked that he did not have time nor did he care to help me.

The apathetic sense that the administration conveys is further exemplified by the complete circus thats otherwise known as student government. At our last elections roughly 2,000 of our 20,000 student populuation voted, resulting in some candidates winning with less than 10 total votes.

Simply, the U while having its strong points, is overall a lackluster university. The incompentecy of the adminstration coupled with the suffocating LDS culture results in an impotent institution. While I met some very intelligent professors and fun people, and had some good experiances, I've decided that the negative aspects of the U are simply too unbearable and have decided to transfer out to Northwestern University.

Pros:

1. Great Dorms

2. Some Good Programs

3. Overall Good Teachers

4. Good Recreational Facilities

Cons:

1. Horrible Food

2. Mormon Culture

3. Incompetent Administration

4. Lack of Funding

5. Lack of Diversity

6. Large and Disjointed Campus and Student Body
