It is quite often refered to as a high school enviroment only missing the bells between classes. Don't come to this school with the expectation of being able to skip classes and get away with it like you can at big colleges. They take attendence in most classs and if you get more then three absences with out a really good excuse (Parent dead or you hospitalized) then you fail the class. My classes so far have had between 9 and 20 students though some people I know are in classes as small as 2 people and as large as 27. If you are looking at being a dorm student here, my advice would be not to. The fire alarm in the dorms goes off at least twice a week typically between 3 and 6 am and nothing ever gets fixed in the dorms. There is also a new rule on campus completely forbidding overnight guests. For those of you reading this that smoke, there is no smoking in the dorms and there is also no smoking anywhere where there will be a roof above your head other then outside AJP which also might be changing to no smoking soon.Anyone looking at driving to school, DON'T park in Lot C unless you absolutely have to. There is constantly cars broken into in Lot C day and night. Currently the only security guard in Lot C is a female who only has a can of mace and is too afraid to do anything about the break ins. To park in Lot A you have to arrive at the Lot before 8:15am. Lot B constantly has people coming an going but for the best chances of getting a parking space you would have to get there before 8am. Lot C never really fills up because it is a huge open lot with most of it not being paved and everyone parks where ever they want. I've got stuck in this lot before by people parking in the only way out.Bus transportation to and from Carlow is relatively good. If you buy your bus pass from student affairs you get a 10% discount. There is quite a few bus stops around the school that can take you to almost anywhere around Pittsburgh.Transfering into or out of this school is made very difficult by weird course names and different credit allotments. Several people I know that transfered into Carlow are having to go a total of 6 years including the 2 years at the previous school. So if you are looking at transfering make sure the credits work first. The Honors program here is fairly rewarding mainly for getting to register anytime you want starting on the first day of senior registration. However, practically none of the advisors know anything about the Honors program so you have to ask your advisor to check with the registrars office if you want to register early. You will also have to take your form down to the office instead of registering online. If you decide to go to Carlow and you're not familiar with the area some things you have to keep in mind are:You need to be ready to hike up and down a hill all day as the entire campus is on a huge hill. You need to watch for the opposite flowing buses when crossing Fifth Ave to get to and from AJP.Most of the people at Carlow went to High School together at one of the Catholic schools in Pittsburgh, thus most people already know each other. |
