I've been a student at Adelphi University for two years, and I'm going into my third year. The number of problems that I've had to deal with at the school in general is greatly out of my league. I have found too many cases of misinformation, misunderstanding, and misuses of school policy to be satisfied with the Adelphi experience. There is NO interdepartmental communication. Despite the fact that Adelphi's poster slogan is I PLAN SCHOOL AROUND MY LIFE, there is no such planning involved. Classes are not as flexible as they may seem to be in the advertisements. I am a full time, undergraduate psych major, and in signing up for my classes for the past three semesters in a row, I have had a TON of conflicting issues with many of the REQUIRED classes all being offered at the same time, and REQUIRED major classes not being available to students after the first day of registration. I've been the subject of many battles with Financial Aid, which is practically nil at Adelphi. New freshman are offered many scholarships to attract them to the school, but in fact, there is a severe decrease in these scholarships towards upperclassmen and a general decrease of information as the administration blames different departments for problems with Registering, Financial Aid, and Class Help. There are very few resource centers, which are mostly full anyway, by the time the noon hour hits. There are too many qualifying incidents to call Adelphi a "safe" school. Just this past September, freshman in the new dorm building were held at machete point, as they were robbed of their belongings. Also, as reported in NEWSDAY, the school was just robbed of $250,000 in funds by a secretray working within the administration. There have also been racial riots on campus. Two years ago, Homecoming ended in a knifefight, between two different racial groups and the University was locked down as police were called to the scene.

Ironically, you need a car to really do anything if you live on campus, but there is nothing resembling GOOD PARKING. There are too few spaces, and the spaces that are there are too small. YOU have to make your own parking, which you stand to be ticketed for, (and I have been.) Of course, there is available parking, but it is available a half a mile away, at the Garden City Pool. You have to be shuttled to and from the school by bus, after leaving your car, and your car must be out of the parking lot by 8:30, or you must walk the 1/2 mile to a mile to your car. This is ridiculous, when you consider the recent ten inches of snow that have just hit Long Island. The idea of walking in the half mile of snow is not appealing with all of your books on your back.

One further problem that needs to be addressed is the misinformation given by the school. Despite being told as freshman that you achieve the FULL school experience when you double major, you are given the impression that upon graduation, you recieve two degrees. I have just discovered, that due to a lack of communication with the deans and departmental advisors, you do not actually become aware of the fact that you will not recieve a double degree. You have to pick 1 degree, and then receive a "general equivalency" transcript in the other major.

On a positive note, the campus asthetically is very pleasing, and the grounds are beautiful. The new dorm addition is outstanding, although the other dorms stand in need of improvment. Faculty are generally friendly, if not always available, and students are what you make of them. You can always find friends, you just have to look past the obvious cliques that exist.
