Don't go here if you are wanting a big party town (like Austin/Dallas/Houston). But with the small atmosphere comes a closeness between the students, faculty, and administration that is unmatched by larger state schools. You know everyone and it is very easy to get involved in extra activities such as sports, social clubs, student government, etc. Also, because of the small size, most classes have less than 20 people. I've NEVER had a class over about 40 (including core classes). I'm in the Political Science and English departments. The poli sci program is amazing…I've never experienced classes like this anywhere! There is no such thing as "busywork" and most of the class time is dedicated to hands-on application of the material (You'll spend an entire semester "running" for President of the U.S. or debate the class in a 3 month long "Senate session." Though I have only experienced other departments through random classes, every faculty memeber I have encontered is friendly and not only remebers your name, but knows you personally. It is not uncommon to have dinners/class get-togethers at a professor's home. I've even had a few dinners at the President's house! It's not just a school, it's like a second family! If you are looking for a small university with great students, faculty, and education program choose McMurry! |
