I did my undergrad and MBA degree at UMass Dartmouth, and was able to get a great job with decent pay within 3months of looking. While my quick success may be attributed to having had very good grades and having been involved in many extracurricular activities, I would like to stress that I was chosen (there were only 2 openings) over many aplicants (recent graduates from various good schools and others with mainly on-the-job experience). While UMass Dartmouth isn't an ivy league, it's a very good school; it's all about how much effort YOU are willing to invest into it. There are many clubs, and students are encouraged to be part of school spirit. Many faculty and staff members also work with you to help you succeed; and the students in general are friendly.The most frustrating aspect of the school is probably administrative politics, however, this is what the "Student Senate" is for. Rest assured that you'll be a very happy camper as long as you join, make your voice heard, and stand for your rights. There are more than enough opportunities granted to students to make themselves heard and respected.Another benefit to going to UMass D is that, if you play your cards well, i.e. fill out FAFSA ontime, apply to inside and outside scholarships, you can graduate with an undergrad degree with less than $20,000 in loans (and without financial help from parents). However, this requires you to be on-top of deadlines and be able to ask about scholarships and workstudy programs.I can't speak for the other departments but I am also aware that the MBA department gives wonderful TA/RA financial help if you apply quickly.Another benefit to going to UMass D is that they offer tons of classes which make it possible for very focused and motivated students to graduate with really good grades in 3 years. To take advantage of this though, be prepared to "memorize" the school's general catalog book, course listings, and be an avid visitor of the advising center (remember though that you'll most likely be your own best advisor).All in all the school is wonderful if you go into it with a long-term plan about what you want to accomplish (education and social). |
