I don't feel like writing several paragraphs so here are some key points:

  • Don't go here if you have to pay more than in-state tuition.
  • It's an average state university, but you can still go on to greater things if you choose your courses wisely.
  • Get two majors if possible.
  • I can't stress this enough, but TRY to be familiar with your professors. Their recommendation letters will get you far in terms of graduate schools and other things.
  • Get an internship or do undergrad research.
  • Ames is a terrible town with almost nothing to do but go drinking, but find some good friends and do you own thing. I almost never have "nothing to do" anymore. In fact, I'm almost always extremely busy.
  • Don't rely on your advisor to pick your courses if you want to graduate in 4 years. Be independent.
  • Try to maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher, but don't stress out about trying to maintain a 4.0. In fact, people who have 4.0 GPAs bother me quite a bit, but I won't go into that rant.
  • Do things that make you happy, be passionate about things you love. I'm talking about your coursework as well as other things in life. Don't try to appease professors who don't understand your passions. You may end up with a bad grade, but it won't really matter in the long run.
