Ah, the south. Gays are only barely accepted here. The unfortunate levels of oppression and bigotry that I've experienced here have been very distracting. Many people (not just those of the student body) are conservative, overly religious, or bigoted. Most of the teachers that I've had classes from are great. Some of them have terrible office hours, though. On another note, the campus is very small and so is the student population. Everyone knows everyone, even people who you never told your name to will know you. Basically, if you're gay... don't bother; it's not worth it. Otherwise, you might not have any problems... Sadly enough, if only I did better in high school, I wouldn't be here. Some questions that came to mind: What condition are the buildings in? Is anything falling apart or in terrible condition? Kenrick Hall, which is an old building, is very dilapidated. Paint is peeling, windows are broken, blinds are nearing falling down and possibly injuring someone. In the bowels of the building there's apparently abestos still being used (I've seen warnings about creating "dust"). During spring time it's boiling due to disabled air-conditioning or heating accidentally left on--vice verca during the winter. Buckman hall is not so old (almost 11 years old) and showing signs of wear. Since Psych courses are given in these two buildings that's all that I've paid attention to regarding the conditions of the buildings on campus. The Mens' dorms are alright. Up to eight people can share the bathroom and the walls have a lovely cinder block design and texture (lol). Are you wanting to live on campus? Well, the rules regarding drugs are very lenient, almost non-existant. In fact, all of the rules are pretty much like that. Is the place secure? The three-person security staff is always overworked. Cars have been stolen. Possessions have been stolen from cars, dorms, and apartments. The staff only does a half-assed job. Fortunately, the school is located in a low crime part of Memphis (crime STILL happens though).
