Statistical Analyzer:

St. John's is a Catholic University. They just finished a new free standing church on the Queens Campus named St. Thomas More Church. The inside is beautiful, it is round seating and has tall ceilings with stained glassed windows and murals on the walls. Really a unique and beautiful place to gather with students and have mass. It is right on the great lawn in the heart of the campus. The builidings are older, and the campus is a city campus. Buildings are close, less grass, etc. But it is in NYC so I don't know what else you could expect. Parking was a problem but it has gotten much better. It's about 50% commuters and 50% resident students. Dorms are beautiful, if you are lucky enough to get an upper floor you have a beautiful view of the Manhattan skyline from your living area window. The food on campus is great (Taco Bell, Burger King, Pizzeria, Deli, etc.) The dining hall for the resident students is ok - basic cafeteria food. Some of the students come here from out of state and are shocked by the diversity. Queens is the most diverse county in the United States. St. John's is a diverse school. It is mostly white, black, asian, and indian in hertiage. The schools are kind of split up that way as well - the Law School has a completely different administration and academic calendar than the rest of the University. The Professors vary. Some are older and see to have been with the University forever, and those might be challenging. The newer professors are into the school clubs and organizations a little more and tend to have more office hours available for their students. Some of the priests and nuns are tough - but you have to expect that at a Catholic University. The administration is very helpful, of course with some downfalls, but that's pretty much a given with any administration. The BIG EAST sports are the heart of SJU. The basketball team had a rough year last year and got alot of bad press, but St. John's handled the situation right. Hired a new coach, expelled most of the players and started fresh this year. They have a young team now with alot of potential. They didn't have the best season (at least not up to St. John's standards) - but they did beat the Georgetown Hoyas and other teams. They'll be back. The campuses are in Queens, Manhattan (downtown), Staten Island, Long Island (all the way out in Oakdale), and Rome. The campus is Rome is beautiful - overlooking the hills of Rome and about a two minute walk from Vatican City. If you have a chance to do their summer program there (four weeks) or a semester abroad they have both undergraduate and graduate courses and you get regular SJU Credits. Take full advantage of all SJU has to offer. It's easy to get involved in clubs, honor societies (if you have the grades), and greek life. Just be friendly because sometime's it's hard to make friends if you are a commuter and do not live on campus. The neighborhood around the Queens Campus is really nice with a Barnes & Noble, Cold Stone Ice Cream, Pharmacy, Nail Salons, etc. all within one block of campus. SJU is a New York powerhouse when compared with other universities in the area (ie: Hofstra, Adelphi, Fordham). You will also find that Alumni's tend to take care of their own, aka graduate from SJU and it's like you have connections you didn't even realize you could. Good luck in your decision but if you want a New York Catholic University with great academics, nationally ranked sports teams, and great alumni connections, there is no other place for you but St. John's University.
