I had a very positive experience as the student body is very diverse and friendly. I now have many friends, some from different countries, that are young enough to be my children. I met one student that was 80 years old. Many of the students are going on to complete a degree at a four year college, usually the University of Arizona or Northern Arizona Univ. The faculty is very approachable and is usually very clear as to what is expected in their class. Once in awhile you will get a professor that is vague and capricious but you learn to drop that class quickly. Many professors have a big emphasis on timely arrival to their class and some make threats to drop students if they are late one too many times. Once in a while you will get a "strange" student in your class but they are monitored very closely. Once you get into the higher level classes in your major, the makeup and motivation of the students starts to change. I didn't participate in athletics or clubs but they are there if you are into that. The Softball team won a Junior College National Championship in 2004. The mens and womens Basketball teams need work. The football team went 9-3 in 2004 and won the Pilgrims Pride Bowl game for Junior colleges. One problem that I have with the college is a lack of a decent color scheme. Its current colors are black and dark blue. Someone colorblind must have picked the colors.Pima Community College is what you make of it. If you want to start your education, complete your education, or just get an education, the college is there for you. The cost is reasonable too. Pima has a large amount of foreign students and hispanic students that usually move on to the University of Arizona and do very well there.The college is "user friendly". You can take classes on-line, Saturday, Sunday, evenings, accelerated, and during the week. They even have day-care for children, up to age five, at the West and Desert Vista campuses. The cashier,counselors, and registration personnel are usually available until 6:45 PM most days and on Saturday on some campuses. Most personnel that one comes into contact with have aHow can I help you attitudeand are not condesending as I experienced at a University in the East. Class size is reasonable also. The math dept. is going through some changes as they are trying to reduce the drop rate of students. The largest class that I had contained 40 people but it was a math class and many dropped out after a few weeks. Parking is abundant and free unlike some universities that try to make a profit from a lack of parking by giving you a ticket.Pima Community College is currently trying to become a four year university but its efforts are being blocked by the other four year universities in the state. If PCC becomes a Four year university, I would want to stay. With all of the support and guidence that I received, I really don't want to leave.Some people/students that I have met at the University of Arizona come across as snooty and dismissive.One of the most positive experiences in my life as I have been to four different colleges in different states. |
