College graduation helps, at the very least, give one a sense of entitlement, a not altogether unimportant thing in itself. It is difficult to go on to graduate school without getting through college. I should have known enough to get really great grades, so that entering the most prestigious and selective graduate schools would have wanted to give me money. Having gone to school in D.C. is regarded elsewhere as a sign of status. Graduating from big name grad schools is another. One can learn just about as well at lesser touted institutions, but there is a great advantage granted to those who can claim to be from a "top tier" school, an automatic acknowledgement from others that the person who went there must be smart. |
