Free thought and open discussions are rare and discouraged by the conformist atmosphere. It's not what I would call an "academic" institution in the full sense of the word. But it is technically proficient, hence the name. It's best described as a over-hyped trade school in disguise. I think some of my high school courses were more challenging than most CalPoly courses. That said, it's cheap. And the name is highly regarded in the field (mainly for the quality of the architecture, engineering, and ag departments…3 fields at which CalPoly actually excels). If you are looking for bang for your buck, CalPoly is a great deal, and if you are looking for money after graduation, CalPoly's name on your diploma should get you a good job. If you are looking to actually grow as a person—good luck, you won't get any help here. |
