I love, love, love the University. I'm from Atlanta though, and I'll admit it's a bit of a culture shock when you first arrive in Tuscaloosa…diversity?? culturally stimulating?? It's not quite a thriving, cutting-edge metropolis (ha) but if you are looking for (or can handle) the small town atmosphere, then Alabama is a WONDERFUL place (and hey, Tuscaloosa is still bigger and more exciting than Auburn). Greek life is the driving force behind everything here (besides football which reigns supreme), and being Greek myself, I really enjoy that aspect. But in all honesty, if you don't plan on going Greek, I wouldn't suggest coming here. The campus is absolutely GORGEOUS (everything looks like it's straight out of Gone With the Wind and the fraternities and sororities look like plantation homes!) and I'm pretty confident in saying that the people are too. Academics are what you make of them. If you want to challenge yourself and take difficult courses, they are available to you, but if you're content to just slack and get by, then lots of people do that too. We have several excellent Honors Programs including the International Honors Program which is a great opportunity. We party realllllly hard down here though, so if you're not comfortable with that, again I wouldn't suggest Bama. (Freshman year I went out a good 6 nights a week…)But if you want a college that will show you an amazing 4 years, I wouldn't change schools for anything. As long as you have enough drive to ensure you can keep your grades up in a 'party school' atmosphere, totally look into Bama. ROLL TIDE!!!!!
