Portales is small town with a small mind. Theres not a whole lot of emphasis on the youth, and generally theres nothing to do. If you want to something fun and different you have to drive 20 miles. Or if you want to go to a big city you have to drive 1.5 hours for Lubbock, or 3.5 hours for ABQ. When I first arrived at Eastern I felt unwelcome, and I didnt really fit it. Most people are small minded wanting nothing more than to than to fit in their own cliques or groups. My freshman and sophomore years were the hardest, but once I got used things it go a little better. My major is BFA Media and Technology (graphic design with an emphasis in computer animation). I'd have to say that this is one of Eastern's better degrees. The art program is good but lacking in some areas. They dont have alot of money to be potentially what they could be. Nonetheless, the art program is fairly good. The teachers are really good and personal. They want to know who you are and help you succeed. The drawing and materials classes are an intro to art basically. The really big downfall about art is that theres no where to get art supplies, except Hobby Lobby and the Bookstore. Even then they usually dont have most of what you need. The computer labs are fairly good, they have brand new computers every year. The Mac Labs are nice as well with about 10-20 computers in each lab. They have Adobe Suite, Maya, Softimage, After Affects, etc. So the program is fairly good considering where the college is located. However, I wish I could have gone to a bigger town, with more to do, more diversity, and more open minded people. |
