I worked 60 hrs/wk as a Paramedic and still was able to get effortless As and Bs in my major classes, so the challenge just was not there. The reputation of the Emergency Management program is decent in the field, but blown up to sound much bigger within the program. The specific EM degree was very, very useful at the time I completed it (Dec 2001), but now every school seems to have thrown together some sort of mess to ride on the wave of Katrina and the World Trade Center.

The school itself does not have much of a social atmosphere, although Dallas and Fort Worth are good places to go for entertainment and prospective work for any other field. The job market in DFW for Emergency Management is heavily saturated with UNT grads, so looking elsewhere is probably the way to go. I have had great success since leaving the program, and I attribute that to the degree. I was moderately well prepared for the practical side of work, although there are a number of changes I would make to strengthen the program.

Parking is awful, and the rent-a-cops think they are military. Two of my professors (including one in my major) spoke such poor English that I gave up trying to be there for the lecture and just read the book. Getting accepted to the school was effortless, and at the time I went ('98-'01) it was shockingly cheap (about $110/credit, although I've heard it's much more now).

Overall, the coursework was too easy and I wish I had learned more, but it was well organized, user-friendly, and the professors tended to be there when needed.
