The art program is simply a joke. It is lead by three art instructors who have little to no success in their careers, yet they try to dictate the future of their students. Attend a different college unless you work in a minimalist style and worship the art of Mark Rothko. If you do figurative work it will be reflected in your grades. I base this off the GPAs of my peers. Everyone who worked in a minimalist style obtained higher grades. Most of the grad schools I've contacted describe IC's art program as 'defunct'. The instructors are very bad at giving students Letters of Recommendation and have lied to me twice about sending them… that is the only way I can put it. What else can you call it when a professor says he will send a Letter, but fails to do so?IC is also the only college I know of that does not have art majors exhibit at least twice a year. Your lucky if you are able to have a senior exhibit of your work. So don't attend Illinois College if you are expecting to gain gallery experience. Two of the professors rarely attend student exhibits to beging with (Unless the students works in a minimalist manner.). It is my opinion that the art department at IC is the worst department on campus. The art department was not even designed for what it is being used for today. The two studios were originally lounges for the music department and the studios have more than one OSHA violation. I warned the college about this several times, but no one listened. On a side-note. The social life at IC is what you make it. If you are bored on a Friday night it is most likely becuase you are a boring person to begin with. Really… there are live concerts practically every night less than 20 miles away. I seen Smile Empty Soul twice, Soulfly, Sevendust and several other great bands at the same location and the ticket are only like $15 at the most. So stating that there is nothing to do is bogus considering that it is a short drive to the capitol. |
