South Carolina State is a HBCU and is a school that I would say "means well." They do have several problem, however, that may or may not fit your lifestyle. I was never the person to make a scene and be all loud and ghetto so in many cases I did not fit in with the crowd. Many of the events held at SCSU that were supposed to be or should have been cultural events were just oppurtunities used to play the hottest song (Rick Ross, Lil Boosie, etc.) There is nothing wrong with the music (in fact I love rnb, hip hop, and rap) but there is a time and place for everything and think State had a hard time realizing that. My advice to anyone planning on attending State is… visit the campus and do so several times. Take a look at the dorms… taste the food from the cafe and the pitt… observe the students walking along the street and see how they talk and act, talk to a few faculty members (and students), be aware of what you're getting into before you get into it. If everything is cool then thats great, but if not…at least you know. I attended State my freshman year and now I am going to Coastal Carolina to start my sophomore year. I learned alot about myself and my people at State, so for that I wouldn't change a thing…but I won't go back. Its bitter-sweet. Good Luck, I hope I helped someone
