Ok, so it has been 30 years since I graduated from SIU. However, I have some very strong feelings about my years there and wanted to share them.

Southern Illinois is beautiful and everyone should take advantage of the numerous opportunities available to experience the area.

SIU had the reputation of being a party school when I went there and it appears it still has that reputation. Please tell me, what college is not a party school? UW Madison and IU have been Playboy's party school picks for several years. I like to point out to people that if you want to party, you will find it at any school. I loved my party times at SIU,(I still will not share some of the stories with my own children) but I also knew I had to study. FIND THE BALANCE!!! Take advantage of the great social party sceen but,at the same time, know when you need to study.

SIU has excellent programs. Take advantage of the time. Get to know your department people, get involved in department activities, GET YOURSELF KNOWN in the department. You would be surprised at how much you can get from this. Just by talking to your instructors in an informal setting can be reflected in your grades and opportunities (and letters of reccomendation). Let them know you are making an effort.

I am currently in a profession with colleagues from Ivy Leage schools, Big 10 schools and other prominent universities. My salary is comparable to all of them and I am respected in my field. My SIU bachelors degree got me my first job. It was not my SIU degree that got me my second job. Where you go from that first job is not because of your SIU degree!!!! ( or a U of I degree or a UW degree)

Your future depends not on where you got your degree… but how use use your knowledge and skills
