Coming into college, I was undecided, and remained so until halfway through my sophomore year. I decided to major in economics, which happens to be one of the least popular majors at Goucher College. To be honest, however, I am not sure as to why that would be. The econ department at Goucher, though very small, is actually quite good. My professors are knowledgable, friendly, and extremely helpful. My work load is not always as rigorous as I would like, but I feel as though I am still getting a solid education which should hopefully set me up for many fruitful years in graduate school and my career beyond that. With that being said, my time at Goucher College has been, at times, less than satisfactory. To begin, the social life here is nightmarishly bad. If you're like me, you look for fun on the weekends, whether that be going to a party, hanging out with people, or engaging in on-campus activities. Well, if these things sound good to you, then choose another school. Spending a weekend at Goucher is like spending a weekend in a ghost town. There's practically nothing to do (unless you have a car, like me), very few people even appear on campus (as they're all locked inside their rooms like a bunch of recluses) and parties are non-existent on campus (campus security has gotten extremely rigid) and parties off campus are uncommon, and when there is one, it usually sucks. Further more, don't be mislead like I was with the girls-guys ratio at Goucher. Most of the girls here are either a.) In a relationship, and often with someone who doesn't even attend Goucher, b.) seemingly disinterested in the entire world around them, c.) so ugly, I can't even stress it enough, or d.) a lesbian. Those girls that I have dated here have either turned out to have some kind of a psychological/emotional issue or have broken my heart. Hence, my feeling on Goucher girls is less than pleasant.Aside from the mediocre social life here, the clubs on campus are decent, at best. Many of the clubs are either political in nature, are focused on something related to religion or choir, or are just so lame that I wouldn't ever consider joining them. The clubs that I have joined are ok, but could be much improved. In addition, there wasn't even an intramural sports program when I got here… I mean, come on! Now, one exists, but like I said, it needs improvement. I hate to continue my negative rants, but this is an honest interpretation of how I feel. I wouldn't be writing this if it wasn't my honest opinion. I still feel that many positives do exist about Goucher, such as the great/caring professors, the enjoyable classes (I have more fun in my classes than I do outside of them), the excellent food (Goucher, in comparison to many other schools, actually has superb food and excellent food selection), the surrounding town (I hate Maryland, but Towson is a great college town), and an attractive campus. If the social life here was better, I'd have very few complaints, but the simple fact is the social life here compares well to a high school social life—just the type of "social life" that I tried to get away from. |
