There was leeway at the time to be happy go lucky”and I was. I didnt hesitate a minute to pursue some spontaneous intellectual curiosity and let the courses I was paying for wait. I developed a great fondness for literature in extremis, and must have read every book in Reynolda library that explored sexual perversion, crime, or mental illness. Though a free spirit by Wake Forest standards, I rarely drank (except for one 16 oz. Budweiser every Friday night) and never used drugs. I did, however, start to drink coffee by the tank car at Wake Forest. Then came cigars, occasionally at first but now to the point (30 years later) I can hardly think without one in my mouth. Probably the one good habit that I developed at Wake Forest was a fondness for apples. I was on a tight budget and apples were cheap and easy to eat on the go. Nothing reminds me more of Wake Forest than eating an apple. |
