It just kind of sucks when I look at other colleges and see that maintenance is badass and facilities are terrific. Beloit isn't exactly the cleanest place in the world. After particularly crazy weekends, the wall (hangout place when it's warm) is covered in garbage drunk people were too lazy to throw away. A lot of people get alcohol poisoning here, too. Social life is fun, but the surrounding town does absolutely nothing to help out. You basically live on campus and are stuck there unless you have a car, which is not recommended for first-year students. Additionally, the dating scene is rather ridiculous. Beloit is just plain ugly. Of course, it is possible to find attractive people here, but on the whole many Beloit students are really fairly gruesome looking. You see a lot of scraggly-ponytailed guys and computer nerds running around here, and greasy-haired kids. But everyone is approachable, everyone is friendly, and most everyone knows how to have a good time. That being said, alcohol is a pretty serious issue. At Beloit there's an alcohol policy, and an alcohol "philosophy". The policy is that Beloit follows the mandated state law that drinking is illegal unless you are 21+, but the POLICY (which is what is really enforced) is that you are responsible for your own actions, and therefore your mistakes are your problem. So, if you decide to drink and you get caught by the cops (Beloit security doesn't give a shit, just the Beloit cops), it's all on you. That's why alcohol poisoning is so out of control here. Anyway, I'm torn about Beloit. I've only been here a semester, but I'm not sure if I really want to stay or not. I took a sculpture class here and hated it. We don't even have a kiln in our art department. It's really not well funded at all. If you want to be an art major, do NOT go here. You will be sadly disappointed and end up transferring. The anthro department here is fantastic, though. We have our own museum and everything.I love the fact that everyone is so laid back here. That's one thing I really do like. And teachers are pretty awesome, for the most part. Facilities could be much better, though.Oh yeah, and don't go out at night. The surrounding town is extremely sketchy. I went to a pool hall down College Street and I thought I was going to get raped coming home. This dude was following me for a while and I just ran like hell. Pretty scary. During the day it's pretty safe though. |
