Statistical Analyzer:

I applied to a number of major music schools in jazz performance and got in to all. I decided to attend San Francisco for a few reasons. I took the time to get to know the faculty and what their accomplishments were. Luckily I had worked with a few at the Stanford Jazz Workshop which I highly recommend also. They were people that I WANTED to study with. I wasn't looking at just the prestige or "branding " of the school I would attend. I liked that the department was small and intimate like a conservatory but within a bigger, more diversified environment. All of the music students work together with very little competition. The ensembles are terrific with lots of room and encouragement to try new things. If you are in the music department you will have no trouble meeting many great, new friends. Although many people complain about SF being a commuter campus, the upside is that for a large school it never feels very crowded. And let's face it, after second year on any campus you are more likely to move off campus, so what's the big deal? I've met people that live on and off campus that have become good friends.

As for the city, come on, it's SF. Voted #1 city from a few sources. Great outdoor ops. Right across the street from lake Merced. A mile from the beach. Great nightlife, food and clubs. When I looked at all that with a price tag of almost nothing compared to the private tuitions it was a no brainer. Now I'll have money to buy a home or start a business!
