I am a vocal performance major with an emphasis on opera, and I've found the program to be not only rigorous but fruitful, you're going to work your butt off, but it's worth it… basically, if you slacked off in high school, unless you're another mozart or mahler, this is not the place for you, because academic success is held to just as high of a standard as musical success. Don't go here if you just like music, it has to be your passion, because with so many passionate people around you, to be ambivalent will make you miserable. Definately request to live with someone outside of your immediate major, i.e. don't room with another violinist if you're a violinist, branch out, and in the end you'll not only meet more people, but you'll be much happier. The food isn't amazing, so be prepared to buy healthy snacks, but it's fine for the duration. If you are going to apply here, or if you are making the decision to come here, definately visit and have a lesson with whomever you plan on studying under, because you can't go on reputation alone, no matter how good someone sounds, you want to make sure that he/she is the right teacher for you. I know for me personally, my teacher is the reason I chose CIM over my other options, because he and I clicked immediately in our trial lesson BEFORE I had chosen the school. |
