I've lived here, in Switzerland, Cardiff, Wales, London, England, Chicago, Illinois and New York City. USM is SPECTACULAR by all standards Mississippi-related. We are the POOREST state with the LOWEST college graduation rate, and we have the WORST EDUCATION SYSTEM. USM, while certainly mediocre, is definitely on the better side of mediocre, and they have spent a lot of money updating the campus since I was a kid. That said, almost all classes (uppers and basics) are EASIER than Petal High School's upper crust (which is at the top of the shitpile that are Mississippi schools both public and private). At least the professors at USM are nice and easy-going.Not receiving a 4.0, or something extremely close, from USM is a clear statement that a person needs a better work ethic. Just go to class and do the work, and you will be doing more than most of the state does on a day-to-day basis.Hattiesburg is by far the best university town in the state. This area has one of the best availabilities of good quality cuisines in the world at local places such as: Great BBQ (Leatha's), Steak (Connestoga), Cajun (multiple), Southern (Chesterfield's), Tex-Mex (La Fiesta Brava), Japanese (multiple but I'm a Sakura fan), Catfish (Mac's), Chinese (multiple), down-home/country (North Gate Diner) and organic/health conscious (New Yokel Market). Additionally, it has all of the fast-food places and chain restaurants of bigger cities as this is the hub of the region. If you get too bored, go gamble on the coast or go hang out in New Orleans, which is 1:15 to downtown. Also, our restaurants don't all close down at 7:00 like in Starkville or never open like in Itta Bena. Hattiesburg also has a REAL music scene outside of university (unlike Oxford) with Mugshots, Keg and Barrel, The Bottling Co, Saenger, Walnut Circle, etc. Also, you don't have to worry about getting your car jacked like you would at Millsaps. Yeah, it's country but what do you expect in the South? If you're looking for reputation, go to UVA, GaTech or UT Austin as most everything else in the South (public and private) is just like USM for academics - MEDIOCRE. If you want a good job after USM (like most state schools), you need a masters degree or you'll end up with whitish blue collar jobs that pay the 25k-30k my high school friends earn. |
