I wish someone had told me this before I wasted my time here. I left this school after one semester for bigger and better things. I am sure Converse College is the right school for someone, but definitely not me. If you are considering this school is a very good school at what it aims to be: a conservative all girls school. I personally didnt like the fact that there are no men on campus and I later began to believe this is quite unnatural. This type of environment is described as empowering for women but I feel like it does nothing to prepare you for the real world or a real job for that matter. This ideology is dated. I suppose there are some girls out there who feel intimidated by boys and believe this is a good choice, however I think it hinders their ability to learn to live in a normal society. The city this school is in is Spartanburg, SC. If you are looking for a nice place with a young vibe this is NOT it. Spartanburg is not growing, its day has come and gone. There is not much to do, only a few places to go out and the best shopping is Target. On the other hand this is a very safe city and the campus feels very secure. The residence halls are strictly all girls, no male visitors in your room period and no overnight guests. I have previously been to a school that allowed male guests to sleep over. I didnt live on campus because I have too many friends (including male) that I didnt want to loose touch with.My personal opinion: This college is historically designed for women. It offers a wide variety of majors and the courses are rigorous. The type of student is most likely going to get their degree and never do anything with it. They seem to be getting this trophy degree as if to say look what I can do “ as good southern women should. The majority of the students are in serious relationships, engaged or already married. As someone born and raised in the south I can tell you first hand this school is VERY southern. Almost all the students tote their bibles to class and seem narrow minded in their religious studies. The student body is not very diverse “ dont expect a huge cultural exposure.Within my major I didnt learn anything new or important within the semester. I had high expectations going into the classes and was hugely disappointed. Most departments are so small there are only one or two professors to teach all of the courses. I felt that if I stayed at Converse I would be lacking so much in comparison to graduates of other schools. My degree from Converse may look prestigious in Spartanburg and the surrounding area but aside from that it would simply jeopardize my chance to compete for successful jobs. I am sure that other students have had great experiences here but I didnt and I didnt stick around to see if things changed. |
