I came here hoping to do pre-med or pre-dental. After taking the horrible science courses at Marquette, I can say that I doubt I will be either. I came from a very highly regarded high school and took a lot of AP courses. Unfortunately, none of my courses prepared me for the depressing science department at Marquette. Don't come here thinking that you'll "ace" the chem or bio intro courses because you won't. The tests are confusing and designed to make you do poorly. I'm still tryng to locate someone who got an "A" in either my bio or chem classes last semester. The safety situation is also worth mentioning. Although I believe the Department of Public Safety (DPS) tries hard, there have been an absolutely alarming number of armed robberies on campus in the last month. In one case, two freshmen guys walking to their dorms around midnight were abducted at gunpoint and forced to drive around while the armed robbers attempted to use their ATM cards. The freshmen were beaten and the robbers threatened to kill them. I heard one of them had broken teeth. You cannot go more than a block north of campus (area starts getting really bad), westward is an area known as "crack alley", and south of campus is Latin King (Hispanic gang) territory. I'm from a larger city myself but the level of gun violence in the areas around Marquette is shocking. On a positive note, I've really liked the history and psychology profs I've had and I've met some good friends here. The students who go to Marquette are great. |
