UMKC isn't a bad school, but it's not the best. If I had to describe what has been the most beneficial part of my education, I would say that it is faculty interaction. However, if I were to describe the most detrimental part, it would be faculty interaction as well.

Within the biology department, there exist some of the best professors (i.e. Dr. Stephen King, and Dr. Michael Ferrari) and some of the worst (ie. Dr. Anne Smith, Dr. Tamas Kapros, Dr. Anthony Persechini). Most of the professors within the department lie somewhere in the middle.

In terms of teaching excellence, the good teachers know how to make the information interesting. Class times are beneficial in that the students are engaged in the subject, not mindlessly memorizing mundane details.

As for the teaching deficiencies, the teachers I have listed not only have an inability to convey the information in an effective manner, but they also are not willing to connect with the students. They do not offer help. In fact, several of them have been known to make very unencouraging statements like

You're not smart enough to complete this major
While these statements were never made to myself, I am outraged by the lack of politeness at such an academic level. Getting a Ph.D. should have afforded some manners and common sense.

At UMKC, you will learn the necessary information for later graduate schools. Depending on the teacher, some are more difficult than others, and this is not necessarily a reflection on their teaching ability. The course requirements are fair and I am satisfied with the material covered.

As for recommendations, if you are interested in attending UMKC for the biology program, I say go for it. Just be prepared to have a mixture of wonderful and horrid professors.
