It's true that it takes a certain kind of person to succeed at Knox—you have to be willing to put in the work, you shouldn't be looking for a party school, and you should be able to survive in a small community where (it's true) everybody does know everybody. But that's no different from any small liberal arts college. I have found that the faculty I have interacted with, particularly in the Classics department where I study, are some truly wonderful people who I trust and ask for advice not only about classes and academics but about issues and problems outside the classroom as well. I have been gifted with some amazing opportunities—studying abroad in Rome for a semester, a wonderful summer internship in a burgeoning new field, a chance to work on an archaeological dig this summer—and I credit those opportunities largely to Knox. It's not a perfect school, of course; the students can tend to be a little intolerant (most of the student body is liberal, politically and socially), the administration isn't as efficient as we'd like, the school food (while better than a lot of universities I've heard about) gets boring after awhile, and things aren't always in the best repair. But I've found that these are small disadvantages compared to the overwhelming advantages I see in Knox. I've found a group of wonderful, interesting friends and classmates, plenty of opportunities to challenge myself academically, and the faculty and administrative support to succeed at those challenges. I think that the things Knox has taught me will be enough to get me through graduate school and into the world beyond with competence and confidence. |
