Augustana College has so many problems that I don't even know where to begin.

Pros:

  • Firstly, the school is very scenic. I was amazed how beautiful the campus was throughout all seasons. This is where Augustana High School places their trap. Students come to the campus for a visit and act like they've never seen a tree before and automatically love the school. Trust me, I fell for it too. Honestly, I'll miss having a great looking campus like Augie had.
  • The Professors are actually quite brilliant and the classes are somewhat interesting. I learned a lot from my year at Augie. Though some classes were a waste of my time, others were very informative and I thought I learned a lot from them. The professors are very kind and will help you if you are in need of help. What I liked about the professors is that they see you as a person than just another student. They want to be there to teach and educate you, and it definitely shows.
  • The parties aren't that bad. Before I came to Augie, I heard they sucked, but seriously they weren't that bad (most of the parties are frat house parties). Don't expect parties in the winter though because there wasn't any.
  • Some of the students who go there are tolerable. The funny part is that most of the students who I thought were pretty cool kids wanted to transfer like me as well.
  • THE CONS

  • It's f
  • **king high school, plain and simple. The first week I got there, there were cliques and groups forming left and right. That's why I call it Augustana High School because it is. I came from a small Catholic High School, you know where we had to wear uniforms and pray more than the pope himself. I should be use to the small environment, but I wasn't. For some odd reason it was the opposite. The kids who came from big public schools seemed to love the school because the fact that they were known by everyone and acted like the popular kid in some shitty 80's movie. Honestly it was like being a bloody Bayside High. If you don't sing, play an instrument, or play a sport, don't even bother coming here because you wont even survive the first week.
  • The school is way too small. By the first week, you know everyone and I mean everyone. Now, you probably asking yourself.. Wrong! By the first week, a lot of people knew me and I had a decent amount of friends. The problem is rumors and gossip spread around the school and because it's so small everyone knows about it. Plus you always see the same people everyday. So if you can't stand a person, have fun seeing them three or four times that day.
  • The administration is so unbelievably terrible that it makes the Bush Administration look perfect. When I got to Augie, I found a program that lets you create your own major. I decided to send my request to create my own major, had a shitload of meetings, but finally was turned down by the VP of the school. Trust me, I was pissed. I came to Augie to do this program, spent a shitload of money, but in the end it was a simple no. Also, the school never listens to the students, it's all about making more money. This year Augie announced that they would build a new Student Center. Many students protested it, but the school pretty much said, "f
  • **k you" and gave the green light for the project.
  • The school tries to come off as this prestige school that the high and mighty enroll in. Let me ask you this, when a school stops accepting ACT/SAT scores, you call that prestige? Augie announced that they want to become a IVY League school. There is no way in hell that a school with around 2,300 kids and doesn't accept ACT/SAT scores can become a IVY League school. Students at Augie should wake up and realize, a degree is just a degree.
  • The food here is pretty terrible as well. The meal schedule never really changed. Everyday it seemed like the same food was out. Also, the food was not very tasteful as well. I know that college food is bad, but let me tell you, this is bad. I never actually gained weight, I actually lost weight cause the fact I could never eat anything because if I did eat, then I wouldn't be writing this review and my body would be six feet under.
  • The surrounding area which is basically the Quad Cities is extremely dangerous. The first two weeks at school people were stabbed and someone was mugged right outside my window. Now, there's three types of people in Rock Island, college students, drug dealers, and wife beaters. Everytime I looked out the window it reminded me of the wasteland from "The Road Warrior" minus the kid who threw the boomingrang. You couldn't walk a mile without getting asked if you wanted some drugs and then getting shanked by that same drug dealer.
  • Overall, if your thinking about going to Augustana, look else where. Take my advice and avoid this school at all costs. If you don't want to have to spend over 40 grand a year on a school that will make you miserable and make you in serious debt after graduating, don't go to Augie.
