It has been a year since I graduated from Hollins. While I believe I received and excellent education at Hollins, I feel that the curriculum was lacking a bit in choices. I double major and had a hard time trying to meet my requirements not to mention finding classes that I would enjoy as electives. With that said, the classes that were available were great. As for the amount of work I was given, it was a lot and most was challenging. The campus is very picturesque “ the traditions are wonderful. As for the faculty, I have my favorites and not all of them in my departments. I loved the English/literature classes even though I was a business major. I also truly enjoyed my pottery class. Overall, your educational experience is going to depend on the type of person you are “ if you want to be involved you can find things to do. Hollins is a small school with a tight community “ yes there are clicks but name one school that doesnt have them All I can say is that if you are serious about your education and you want to learn, you will succeed where ever you go but at Hollins you will get more than just an education. You will make friendships that will last a lifetime; not only with your fellow classmates but with the wonderful staff and faculty. I never had a problem reaching any of my professors or the dean of students. Even the president of the school was readily accessible. During my graduate college application process, I never had to ask twice for a letter of recommendation. Once I even asked for a letter to be sent out with less than a week left on the deadline. I got the notice from the college I was applying that the recommendation had been received within days of my request. Hollins is a small all female liberal arts school and even though most all female universities have the stigma/stereo type that everyone woman there is either a lesbian who does not shave their legs or armpits that is not what you will find there. It takes all types to make a community and Hollins is a community. If you are considering Hollins, go visit, talk to the faculty or contact an alumna and know that if you decide to attend you will not have a typical college experience but you will have a wonderful experience nonetheless. |
