Furman has at times been frustrating to me, with some closemindedness among certain groups as well as a fair bit of elitism among the many wealthy students. This being said, having come from a humble background and having grown up in Colorado I did not find myself ostricized in any way and found that the majority of students embrace the university's progressive new approach to diversifying its student body both racially and geographically. The social scene isnt stellar, but if you are willing to sacrifice the outrageous parties you would find on larger campuses and make the best of Furman, you can find a good time in Greenville almost any night. Joining a fraternity, something I wasnt initially expecting to do, definitely facilitates a much more active social life and has been a great experience for me. If you're worried that the whole student body is going to be book worms with no life, fear not. Many students here, at least what we like to call the social six hundred (joking, sort of), keep the nightlife reasonably exciting, and there will normally be something entertaining to do in Downtown Greenville as well.Academically, I feel that Furman has exceeded all my expectations and has, as the slogan would suggest, engaged me in my learning. I study here exponentially more than i did in High school, both because the material is more fullfilling and beccause the price tag makes it hard to justify slacking. The professors that I've had so far have all been genuinely concerned about their students and their quality overall has been quite good.Overall, I would reccomend giving Furman a look, the campus is drop-dead gorgeous, Greenvilles a surprisingly cool city and the school's gaining a national reputation academically. |
