My academic experience was generally positive but not necessarily competitive compared to other programs. The biggest advantage was the relatively very high faculty to student ratio and small number of students per class in the advanced courses. We were able to form relationships with the professors on a scale that would be very difficult in other programs. I was also able to participate in honors level independent research that added to my academic career.

However, opportunities and resources at the university were very limited. This became even more apparent once I entered a graduate program at another very large unversity. The State of Maine consistently has underfunded the university. While other state universities were able to make substantial investments in technology and the sciences through the 1980's and 1990's - UMO missed the boat. Faculty research is very UNDER PAR compared to other universities. Other states have been able to establish associated business incubators associated with their state universities - but Maine still struggles with the concept. Why would business interests build in Orono or Old Town.

I can see from more recent student comments - that much has changed. The social activities mostly centered on drinking in the dorms. It was a good thing that I got involved with the ROTC program, which helped me to find some other outlets and a ready made social network. The Army ROTC program contributed significantly to my career success - much more than the university.

I enjoyed the campus that is located on well preserved forest lands. This virtual park land was a constant source of outdoor fun. Future student - if you want the "big city" entertainments - go some where else. The UMO campus excels for those interested in natural environment, biology, ecology and outdoor activities.
