First of all, never volunteer to live at PAR. There is no air conditioning. It is extremely hot during winter and summer, because they turn the heat on high enough that you have to open your windows to have some type of temperature control. Also, the bathroom facilities were poor. Tiles and sinks were broken. On toilet leaked, and there are countless nights I had to take cold showers. Being on a busy road and having to keep your windows open made for poor sleeping conditions, too. Buses go by about every 15-30 minutes, shaking the entire building. The bus system is handy when you are not sleeping, but if you don't mind the chance you take of getting a tire stolen, I would suggest bringing a bike. Most of my english classes were under 40 people, but many of my classes had around 500. If you don't enjoy lecture teaching styles, this is not the place for you. It is easy to get lost in the crowd here depending on what college you are in. My sister had all the help she needed in the ACES college, but my experience in the Arts and Sciences couldn't be more opposite. My counselor was unhelpful. When I ordered transcripts to be sent out, I had to double check to make sure they were sent, and often times, they weren't. Also, finding the right building to turn in things like scholarships and/or certificates of good standing often turn into day-long events that leave you running all over campus. Professors (if you are lucky enough to not have a TA) don't always show up to their office hours, either. Some TAs are fantastic. The best TA I had was in Poli Sci…Dongsuk Kim. He was more helpful and friendly than any professor I ever had. He was from South Korea, so it was sometimes hard to understand him, though. Lastly, the social life…much of the social life here is based around the vast Greek system. I can't pretend to know much about them, but there are many people who enjoy it. Drinking is also a large part of life here. I was often awakened to the sound of drunken singing and yelling from the people inside and outside my dorm. As a non-drinker, I found this obnoxious and frustrating. If you look hard enough, there are a few non-drinkers, but most of them are extremely religious. On a random note, the dorm food is pretty good here, but not much of it is healthy if you don't eat a salad every day.Over all, before you some here, think about these things: |
