It is overwhelmingly white and a great majority of students hail from the affluent suburbs of Chicago. Students of different socioeconomic and racial backgrounds will have a harder time fitting in. Lousy club sports programs coupled with poor athletics means that the best chances for extracurricular activities will be found in neighborhood bars and house parties. This is Milwaukee and campus life revolves around the bottle; the sober need not apply. Academics are mediocre and the general sense is that Marquette is little more than a good place for the wealthy to send their offspring for babysitting until their trusts kick in. In keeping with a fine Jesuit tradition, the campus rests in a somewhat troubled neighborhood and if not for the exhaustive efforts of a large public safety force crime against students would be a real problem. Marquette does everything possible to maintain an overly appealing image and even a visit will be misleading, facts about the university are closely censored even among students and parents. |
