I transferred after one semester. I absolutely detested everything about this university and I wish I didn't waste my time on such a horrible experience.

The person who commented below, by the way, captured many of my feelings, so thank you.

nyhow, here is what I thought.

Honestly, I had the most issues connecting with people. I NEVER felt welcome here. In staters are separated by one or two degrees and did not want friends other than those that they already had from high school. Obviously I cannot speak about literally all in staters, but everybody I personally met wanted nothing to do with new kids. Foreign students (I am not one) were all placed in one dorm and seemed very isolated. I got so depressed…I was far from home, had no friends the majority of my time at UMaine regardless of my great efforts, and I have so many regrets about even attending the one semester I was there. I don't know how out of staters can hack it. The only way I feel that out of staters can make friends is through drinking and, well, I want to remmeber my college experience. I'm not even kidding or exaggerating when I claim that there are very, very few clubs or ways to meet people. People communicate through UM's email server, First Class, and on their message boards. Clubs and events are advertised through First Class and there were about five clubs that extended an open invitation…I attended about three and got fed up after going for the first two months. In spanish club, the first three meetings, we watched a movie. How s this sparking social interactions? No one TALKED. International Relations consisted of a girl talking for about two hours with promises of pizza during the meeting. When the pizza finally arrived at the end of the two hour meeting, all of it had meat on it which I do not consume. Again, no social interactions…just one person doing all the talking. I know there was some religious Christian club, but it was more like the campus cult. In dorms, the RA was a snobby bimbo who didn't give a shit about any of the girls in the hall. She organized a big fat ZERO number of activities and did not even recognize anyone. I would never feel comfortable talking to her about any difficulty I had during my first semester. All she cared about was fitting in…what a wonderful RA she was! I cannot even describe what a miserable time I had at UMaine Orono. The town of Orono itself was a ghost town and Bangor was a pathetic dump. Please. If you are an out of stater and strongly considering UM, take the tour, shadow several students, live in the dorms. Do everything you can to try to get a feel for the place. It may be for some people…I saw one out of stater do very well here once he starting drinking until he passed out almost every night and made great friends this way. But I urge you to consider all your options before coming here. Students are very racist and I have never seen anyone non-Caucasian here. It's so freakin hard to make friends here and be happy. Academics are a joke. I transferred, as well, to a community college to sort out my priorities after fall semester in Maine was done and have met so many cool, friendly people and actually have challenging classes. I am transferring to a different university next year and have talked to some people there and it is nothing like UMaine. It's an amazing place and I need to let go of some of the stereotypes I have about universities now because of such a poor experience at UM. Good luck everyone.
