This school is very bureaucratic, even for a CSU. Most people take longer than 4 years to jump through all the hoops (even community college transfers take a semester or year longer). The structure of the curriculum seems to be based more on departmental politics than a logical sequence meant to progressively build upon knowledge from previous semesters.

Most of the instructors care, a few are good at what they do. However there are a large number of faculty here that simply do not teach well. They may know the material, but they have NO clue how to convey it. Instead they scream at students or dither on incomprehensibly while everyone groans. (Others are painfully clueless and get even basic facts wrong). Also there always seems to be a shortage of profs to teach which means you often get part time profs from industry that haven't had the time to prepare or training to teach. (Occasionally these profs rock and breathe new life into the subject, but really how organized/prepared to teach can you be if you're told which class you're teaching 1-2 days before?)

I find I end up learning from random books I read (beyond textbooks), google, Wikipedia, and other students. It's disconcerting and depressing because school should be about more than googling for explaination. :(

If you go here you're going to have to learn most of the material on your own, be prepared for it and find yourself a study group. Not just a group of people to copy off of (although that's easy enough to find and get away with here), but people you can learn with. Talk to the upper classmen, find out who the good and bad profs are (do NOT trust your adviser to do this for you!!!)
