College is a time to discover who you are and what you believe. Throughout my years I have discovered that Harding is not the place for me. The rules are suffocating. I feel as if my parents are watching me even though they are hundreds of miles away. Harding acts as your parents in their absence and they are strict parents. Curfew is a mistake. The sign-out policy, though good intentioned is a hassle. The dress code is pointless. Chapel is boring on average and a complete waste of 30 minutes. the internet is filtered and it blocks websites it does not deem appropriate for students to be viewing. This seems very juvenile and shows the University's lack of trust it has in its' students. Also, the rules about not having the opposite sex in the dorm room is completely inappropriate. It's Harding's way or the highway. If you don't follow their rules and do what they want, you'll be kicked out.The emphasis on the love and mercy of God is seemingly downplayed to his justice and lawfulness. This seems to go along with their trend of kicking students out for mistakes. Should a student be caught with alcohol, they will be kicked out regardless of whether they are of age or not. If a student is found to be having sexual relations or even the slightest even hint of it, the same goes for them. I have the idea that if someone makes a mistake they should be sent to counseling for it to resolve the problem first instead of being kicked out on the first offense. This to me does not seem very loving or forgiving.Harding has plenty of money for building projects but seems to be lacking in money for practical resources such as camera systems around campus. Cars may be broken in to and vandalized and nothing can be done about it since there is no surveillance and public safety does not make rounds frequent enough to catch someone in the act. Also, dorm rooms have been broken in to from the outside and because of the lack of surveillance system, no one is caught. Yet, Harding has plenty of money to renovate the hotel lobby to look like a 5 star, plush hotel. They seem more concerned with aesthetics than practicality.I will say that not everything about Harding is bad. Many of the professors are very nice and helpful. The resources available on campus to students are very beneficial. The dorms are much nicer than many state college dorm rooms. I have appreciated the integration of faith in with the academics. I have appreciated the way the classes have been taught from a Christian perspective.I do wish that their conservative Christian ideals and principles wouldn't be shoved down the throats of the students. The overwhelming emphasis on missions and their seeming opinion that to go to heaven you must participate and give money to X social issue (such as poverty, service, orphans etc.) and go to X foreign country as a missionary (Africa, in particular). They don't seem to give enough emphasis to being a minister and a missionary right where you are and who you are. Many of the students and administration are close-minded. They refuse to accept anyone who is different than them or different from anyone they've experienced. They refuse to accept any opinion or viewpoint that is different than their own.Harding is not for everyone and I feel these things need to be kept in mind when choosing Harding. If these things sound appealing to you, then Harding is the place for you but I don't want anyone coming to Harding blindly not fully understanding what they are getting in to. |
