I began in 2008 to get my Nursing degree, but it was a horrendous experience. Classes started a week late due to the weather (which couldn't be helped), but once they started I knew I had made a huge mistake. The nursing instructors and the lab instructors are completely incompetent and acted like you are an inconvenience when you asked them a question. The teachers are under paid, so most of them are just passing their time working at Spencerian until they get a better paying job. The teachers DO NOT teach. I was in my first quarter of nursing classes and my instructor would tell us to read the chapters in the book, and then when we would come into class she would just read from the book, word for word. If you asked her a question in regards to the information, she would re-read the paragraph! 3-4 hours a day of listening to an idiot read out of a book is definitely not worth $25,000. Each chapter had NCLEX review questions to help you prepare for boards, and even though the answers were in the back of the book, the teacher would insist that she knew the right answer and the book was wrong! She normally would skip critical thinking, apparently, critical thinking (even though it is a requirement to be a nurse) isn't important during nursing school! During skills check off, a majority of students were passed because they had a lazy lab instructor who just didn't care. I am pretty sure if this is how they are during lab, then they don't care how you do in clinical. I have worked in the medical field for several years now, and I thought people were joking when they said that employers don't want students from Spencerian, but I have learned that it is true! There may be a few students who teach themselves and become successful nurses, but the vast majority will slide by, and who would want a nurse who "floats" through nursing school? When it came to our first test, all of the students were freaking out because nobody had any notes or had learned any information. The teacher told everybody to quit stressing that she would give a review—and what a review it was! The teacher stood in front of the class, test in hand, and read word for word 1-45 the test questions and answers. She spoke extremely fast. Students were trying to write what she was saying down because they had nothing else to go on to study. When a student asked her to slow down, she was in disbelief. Finally, one student threw up her hands and told the teacher to just give her an F on the test! The teacher said, I don't understand why everyone is writing down every word I say, this should all be in your notes. WHAT NOTES? The only thing any student had, was every single line highlighted in their book because she read line for line. I ended up withdrawing 3 weeks into the program because I would rather take the loss on my 3 weeks of time and money, then to spend another 2 years and $45,000 on the lack of education. I would rather wait and go to a school who actually cared whether or not they produced competent, successful nurses. I would not suggest anybody attend Spencerian College, no matter the hurry to get done—it's not worth it!!! |
